New “Invincible Iron Man” Riri Williams Will Now Be Called “Ironheart”

Riri Williams was announced to be taking over the “Invincible Iron Man” comic from Tony Stark. With Riri being a woman, would she really be called “Iron Man?” We now have an answer–Riri Williams is Ironheart!

Even though Civil War II has a long way to go before its conclusion, we’ve learned what the post-Civil War II landscape will look like. Tony Stark will put down the mantle of Iron Man and a new hero will step up to fill the void–Riri Williams.

Riri Williams is a brilliant MIT student who reverse-engineered one of Stark’s old Iron Man suits. She first appeared in the current volume of Invincible Iron Man from creators Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Deodato.

Riri will star in the Marvel NOW! relaunch of Invincible Iron Man from Bendis and artist Stefano Caselli. Some have wondered will Riri go by “Iron Man” or some other variation of the name. In a Wired exclusive, we now know that Riri will go by the moniker “Ironheart.”

Bendis gives some explanation as to how they came up with the name Ironheart:

Iron Woman seemed old fashioned to some,” he says. “Iron Maiden looked like a legal nightmare. And Ironheart, coined by Joe Quesada, after I told him my planned story for Riri, speaks not only to the soul of the character but to the Iron Man franchise as a whole. Tony first put on the armor to save his heart. Riri puts it on for different reasons altogether but still heart-related. When people see her story, you’ll be amazed at how simple and brilliant Joe’s suggestion was.”
