THE FIX #2 Review

Artist:  Steve Lieber
Writer:  Nick Spencer
Colors:  Ryan Hill
Lettering & Design:  Nic J. Shaw

I can’t help but read The Fix and imagine it as an HBO comedy series.  Watching Roy and Mac negotiate the pros and cons of shooting one another in the hand left me in tears.  And this is just the beginning of the comic.

Roy comes across as shifty and untrustworthy.  Which is all true statements.  He does possess street smarts.  You can’t help but wonder how he gets away with some of his ideas.  The guys need to get one of them close enough to the police dog.  What better way to do it than stage an injury and get reassigned.  Sounds easy enough right?  But Roy has to take the crazy up 10 levels with bodily harm.

The Fix is a real collaborative effort between Steve Lieber and Nick Spencer.  Spencer’s writing and dialogue is satirical and witty.  The art from Lieber and Ryan Hill contribute jokes that could be overlooked if someone is speed reading.  Grand gestures in body language lets the reader know how someone is feeling — or reacting to a situation.  And there are many crazy situations.

Some of my favorite moments are the artistic lettering from Lieber.  He peppers the background with some choice words from Mac after being shot by Roy, and when Mac meets his new canine partner.

Each character — whether main or supporting — has a part to play in our tale.  We get great scenes of Sheryl from Internal Affairs having to put up with Roy, and the guys’ boss Josh jamming with his bluegrass band.  Josh has what you would call “anger management” issues.  Let’s just say you’ll want to make sure your banjo is finely tuned before playing with Josh.

A slight detour in the story introduces a fellow cop named Pete Danielson.  Oh poor Pete.  He had such a promising career.  Until he decided to help Roy solve an unsolvable case.  This does give us the best quote from the issue — “Never, ever trust the nicest guy in the room.”
