Dane Havelock is one bad dude.  Just thought I’d get that out there early.  Dane is the personal bodyguard for Queen Emporia.  He’s helping Emporia and her children run away from King Morax.

While they’ve gotten off-planet, their journey is far from over.

Visually Empress #2 has a slightly different look to it.  Which is odd because its the same creative team from issue one.  The colors from Ive Svorcina appear lighter.  Instead of big bold colors, they appear more soft spoken.  Nothing in a bad way.  Just something I noticed.

So the plan is for the family to hide at Emporia’s sister’s place.  Since that’s some lightyears away, they must use a teleporter named Ship.  This introduces a new supporting character named Tor.  A space epic like Empress allows for many interesting beings to come in and out of the story.  Tor could be one of these people.

I loved the aerial sequences that Stuart Immonen, Wade von Grawbadger, and Svorcina come up with.  The different angles give the action extra oomph.  Explosions light up each panel.  That’s something I’ve always appreciated about Immonen’s work.  He can illustrate some action but also brings it in quieter scenes.  Right now I’m looking at a space observatory in a city that has tremendous detail.

Mark Millar has an interesting mother/daughter dynamic in place between Emporia and her daughter Aine.  Aine is against running away and has no qualms letting it be known.  However, in issue two we do see Aine be a team player.  She cooperates with Dane’s plan and even delivers a solid left hook.

Just as the plan to teleport away is working, the last page plants our escapees in a perilous situation.  It literally left me with my mouth open in shock!
