WOW!!  That was my first reaction after finishing The Fix #1.  Comics that mix humor into their storytelling hold a special place in my fandom.  Especially when the humor is entertaining.  That sums up The Fix.  It comes from the minds behind the former Marvel series The Superior Foes of Spider-Man, Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber.  They take their collaboration to a whole new level on The Fix.  Imagine The Superior Foes of Spider-Man with an R rating.

Spencer is a master of smoothly referencing current events or trends.  Something simple as pointing out how crime has changed in the digital age is pure genius.  It reminds me of Jerry Seinfeld comedy — pointing out the obvious in a humorous fashion.  The jokes don’t start and end with the writing.  Lieber hides jokes in his art as well.  Very subtle jokes, like the running gag with the “For Dummies” books or hand gestures accompanied by sound effects by Lieber and colorist Ryan Hill.  Comics lately have done a wonderful job displaying characters walking across multiple panels.  Lieber takes this a step further by showing our criminals run in a full circle.

With this being an Image book, you know there has to be a hook or twist to the story.  I appreciate that the twist comes in the middle of the book instead the end.  Nice change.  It allows for added explanation through flashbacks, which are ridiculously great.  We learn what leads Roy down a life of crime, and its not your typical tale.  Roy’s idea of inspiration is a different take.

The supporting characters could lead their own comics all by themselves.  Roy’s partner Mac has an appreciation for classic porn.  Donovan has…..issues.  That’s a nice way of putting it.  And Josh (Roy and Mac’s “boss”) is delightfully devious.  Oh and we get the shortest look at Pretzels the Dog, but you know he’ll be involved in something crazy before too long.
