Review: ADVENTURES OF SUPERGIRL CHAPTER 1

ADVENTURES OF SUPERGIRL CHAPTER 1
Writer:  Sterling Gates
Art:  Bengal
Cover:  Cat Staggs
Publisher:  DC Comics

Supergirl is the latest superhero television product ripped from the pages of DC Comics.  Focusing on Superman’s cousin Supergirl, it follows Kara Zor-El/Kara Danvers as she navigates a normal life and making a name for herself as the heroine of National City.

Adventures of Supergirl is a Digital First series in the same universe as CBS’ Supergirl.  Because of this, it is very new-reader friendly.  Writer Sterling Gates lets the reader get a sense of Kara’s personality as she battles an opponent named Rampage.  This exchange allows Kara to reflect on her origin of being sent from a dying Krypton to Earth.  Along the way she gets trapped in the Phantom Zone.

What I always forget about the Supergirl/Superman dynamic is that Supergirl is technically older than Superman.  Kara was sent to Earth by her parents to watch over Clark.  When she fell into the Phantom Zone she was put in a state of hibernation.  By the time she made it to Earth, Clark had already established himself as Superman.

With this being a television tie-in, the majority of main supporting players make an appearance.  We get to see Kara’s sister Alex and Director Henshaw (I won’t spoil the shocking revelation we learned about him on Supergirl).  All we’re missing are Cat Grant, Jimmy Olsen and Winn Schott.

Bengal is one of my favorite artists right now.  His style is so vibrant and full of energy.  He is a perfect choice to open this first chapter of Adventures of Supergirl.  Bengal displays a wide range of acting with his characters — varying from facial emotions to physical poses.  There isn’t one wasted stance from a person.

The colors pop of the page.  They match the tone of the Supergirl show, which is bright and bubbly at times.  No hiding in the shadows like another DC Entertainment television property.
