Pick of the Week – A-Force No. 5

a_force__5_by_zurdom-d9d3970a_force__1_cover_by_zurdom-d9b8hmj
What I dug: A version of Loki who wasn’t obsessed with Thor and is capable of caring about others (albeit her own twisted way). The battle between the citizens of Arcadia and the zombies was enjoyable. I hate zombies with a passion but the creative team made them palatable IMO. Jorge Molina deserves an excessive amount of Kudos because it shined brighter than a diamond! The battle sequences were epic!
What I don’t fancy: Not a thing outside of waiting for the next issue
Buy or Nah: BUY IT NOW!!!

Captain America – Sam Wilson No. 1
What I dug: Giving Redwing sonic cannons was an awesome idea! I think Sam’s decision is what Steve would have done and has done in the past. Dig the supporting cast of Misty Knight and Dennis Dunphy.
What I don’t fancy: Sick of seeing Crossbones, he was in the previous Captain America run. Wished they explained if Redwing was a vampire of its encounter with Baron Blood. Could have sworn that Dunphy joined Wonder Man’s anti-Avengers team and died in battle.
Buy or Nah: Buy!

Captain America White No. 3
What I dug: Cirque de La Revolution were interesting visually and I hope to see more of them. This idealistic version of Captain America was refreshing.
What I don’t fancy: Nothing stood out.
Buy or Nah: Buy it!

Civil War No. 5
What I dug: The art was the main appeal. Turning Wolverine into a Hulk was an interesting touch.
What I don’t fancy: The overall story bored me. Combining Civil War with Secret Invasion was a nice concept but the execution wasn’t tight IMO.
Buy or Nah: Nah!

Deadpool vs Thanos No. 3
What I dug: The writers recalling how Mephisto was a thorn in Thanos’ side and incorporating it in this story.
What I don’t fancy: Nothing stands out.
Buy or Nah: Buy!

Guardians of the Galaxy No. 1
What I dug: The cast interaction is the highlight of the book. I loved how Ben asked questions that the fans probably had i.e. “who has the Infinity Armor”.
What I don’t fancy: Groot’s new design slightly bugs me.
Buy or Nah: Buy

Journey to Star Wars No. 3
What I dug: The continued exploration of the Star Wars universe and interaction with the main cast is enjoyable. It was nice to see the older ships from Episode 1.
What I don’t fancy: Nada
Buy or Nah: Buy!

Marvel Zombies No. 4
What I dug: The end was very satisfying. I thoroughly enjoyed Kev Walker’s art!
What I don’t fancy: Nada!
Buy or Nah: Buy

Ms. Marvel No. 19
What I dug: The fruit of Bruno and Kamala’s angst was tender and perfectly illustrated how much they truly care for each other.
What I don’t fancy: Nada
Buy or Nah: Buy

New Avengers No. 1
What I dug: The concept is brilliant, turning a society of evil scientist geeks into a tool of justice.  The art is like a mix between Joe Mad’s and Humberto Ramos.
What I don’t fancy: The art might be too stylized and cartoony for the concept.
Buy or Nah: The concepts and ideas are strong enough to outweigh the art apprehensions, so Buy!

Spider Gwen No. 1
What I dug: The black female Captain America was visually interesting. Curt Connor’s iteration was a welcomed change.
What I don’t fancy: No, real complaint
Buy or Nah: Buy

Spider Man 2099 No. 1
What I dug: Cripes! Man oh man wasn’t expecting that ending!
What I don’t fancy: Is every Spider-Man cursed with a life filled with great loss and tragedy? Can’t one have a decent life?
Buy or Nah: Buy

Uncanny Avengers No. 1
What I dug: Captain America’s attempt to maintain unity in an ever evolving world was admirable. It’s also interesting to see the shift from Tony being the Avenger’s breadwinner to Wade. The team’s lack of serious muscle does lead to opportunity for creativity. These Avengers can’t bash a problem with Repulser Rays, Mjolnir or Gamma Fists. The reader gets to see firsthand how toxic the environment is too mutants and the natural disdain for Inhumans as a result.
What I don’t fancy: Nothing
Buy or Nah: Buy

What If Infinity X-Men No. 1
What I dug: Finally, Sam gets time to shine as a leader (too bad it’s in an alternate reality). It was great to see Chamber, feels like other writers forgot about him.
What I don’t fancy: Part of me expected more mutant survivors. How did Rachel miss the opportunity to scan the team when they first arrived? Thought she inherited her mom’s annoying habit of invading folks’ minds.
Buy or Nah: Buy
