Pick of the Week – Weird World No. 4

What I dug: The overall story is reminiscent of the mythological warrior’s journey. It possesses many of the elements that enjoyed the journey of Odysseus: a warrior king desperately trying to get home; encounter with bizarre and terrifying creatures; and a unique cast of characters. Jennifer Kale and her army of Man-Things were excellent additions to the story. The battle with Skull was short and sweet. Mike Del Mundo’s art is a perfect fit for the series.

What I don’t fancy: Nada! Jason Aaron excels on this type of story!

1872 No. 3

What I dug: I am a lifelong fan of the western genre, so adding a super hero element to it was icing on the cake! This version of Bullseye was polished/refined evil and was delighted to see that he received the end one would expect from someone with a literal bullseye on his forehead.  Delighted to see that Doom didn’t replace “god” in this realm’s vocabulary.

What I don’t fancy: This could have been my pick of the week, but my love for warrior epics is greater than my love for westerns

Buy or Nah: Buy!

Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps No. 4

What I dug: The cast is unique and engaging to the point I want to see more of them. The art is a treat, thoroughly enjoyed the character and vehicle design.  The dog fight between the Thor Corps and the Banshee Squadron was epic!

What I don’t fancy: The decision made by Kitt was predictable. It’s a bit saddening that I won’t see more of the cast. The Baroness of that realm was interesting and I wanted her to be fleshed out some more.

Deadpool vs Thanos No. 2

What I dug: Wade’s immortality curse was acknowledged. A convincing explanation for why Thanos cursed Wade was given. The overall story felt like a murderous version of the Odd Couple.

What I don’t fancy: Don’t have a real complaint. Part of me wished Tradd Moore did the interiors as well.

Buy or Nah: Buy!

Fury No. 1

What I dug: The interaction between Nick Jr and Nick Sr was enjoyable. It was nice to see the older Nick after Original Sin.

What I don’t fancy: Dislike time travel as a plot device. My years of reading X-Men & misfortune of watching Heroes contributed to my intense aversion

Buy or Nah: I found the Agent Carter Issue more enjoyable. But outside of my temporal travel aversion, it is a good read.

Empire of the Dead Act 3 No. 5

What I dug: The more convincing depiction of the Vampire vs Zombie episode of Spike TV’s Deadliest Warriors was a major draw. The relationship between Xavier and the kids was unique.

What I don’t fancy: I have an almost pathological hatred of zombies and everything zombie related. The lack of cannibalism made it readable IMO.

Buy or Nah: Grudgingly buy

Inhumans – Attilan Rising No. 5

What I dug: The ending gave an inkling of how much control Doom has over Battleworld and how cruel he can be.

What I don’t fancy: No, real complaint

Buy or Nah: Buy

Kanan No. 6

What I dug: This book has two elements that I enjoy: Greg Weisman’s writing and Star Wars Rebel. Greg Weisman is the man behind my favorites: Gargoyles, Spectacular Spider-Man, and Young Justice. Star Wars Rebel is an animated series second to the Clone Wars microseries IMO.

What I don’t fancy: Nothing! Are you daft?!

Runaways No. 4

What I dug: Loved the artwork and character design, especially Bucky.

What I don’t fancy: The romance and Bucky’s decision was too predictable. It reminded me of an 80’s teen film

Buy or Nah: Buy

X-tinction Agenda No. 4

What I dug: Locke and his unique reaction to Transmode Virus Infection was a nice touch. Finally someone who doesn’t become a TO zombie driven with the desire to infect others.

What I don’t fancy: Nothing

Buy or Nah: Buy

Years of Future Past No. 5

What I dug: Christie Pryde, Giant-Sized Lockheed, and the overall art direction were pluses in my book.

What I don’t fancy: Battle of the Atom exhausted my patience for dark and bleak futures for mutant kind. Fortunately, I clearly understand why the world is messed up and the villains’ motives (unlike Battle of the Atom).

Buy or Nah: Buy
