#kliqsoftheweek For 9/9/2015

Welcome to a new segment called #kliqsoftheweek.  I started a trend of tweeting comics I am looking forward to using this hashtag.  This weekly article will take a look at the five comics I am anticipating the most for New Comic Book Day!  Picking just five comics to gush over is no small feat, so make sure to chime in with your picks in the Comments section below.

TYSON HESSE’S DIESEL #1 (of 4)
Writer & Artist:  Tyson Hesse
Price:  $3.99
Publisher:  BOOM! Studios
Release Date:  September 9th, 2015
Tyson Hesse's Diesel Main Cover by Tyson Hesse

When I read the description of Tyson Hesse’s Diesel #1, what grabbed my attention was the artwork.  Hesse writes and draws this lighthearted limited series that should appeal to fans young and old.  Below is the synopsis:

“Diandra Diesel isn’t very good at anything. The daughter of the late Tungston Diesel, she has yet to live up to her father’s great reputation. Her childhood rival has inherited control of her family’s airship and left Diandra the only job she’s qualified for: picking up the trash. But all that changes when a mysterious flying engine crashes into Diesel’s life and takes her on a journey through the skies.”

As someone who has never been the biggest Superman fan, the creative team of Greg Pak and Aaron Kuder have turned Action Comics into one of my favorite DC comics.  Last issue ended with Clark Kent revealing that the leader of the police force hellbent on arresting him was really a shadow monster.  These creatures have infiltrated farther into Metropolis’ government system, and it is up to Superman to stop them.  Below is the synopsis:

“The epic “Truth” arc reaches its finale as Superman makes some brutal choices and discovers the source of the Shadow Warriors.”

RED HOOD/ARSENAL #4
Written By:  Scott Lobdell
Art By:  Denis Medri
Price:  $2.99
Publisher:  DC Comics
Release Date:  September 9th, 2015

This series has taken me by surprise.  I originally only read issues of Red Hood and the Outlaws for whoever was doing the art.  The stories never interested me much.  Now with the relaunch of Red Hood – Arsenal, writer Scott Lobdell has taken a “back to basics” approach and made Red Hood and Arsenal superhero mercenaries.  This has made for wild adventures, including this week’s guest-appearance by robo-Batman.  Below is the synopsis:

“The boys battle Batman! Red Hood and Arsenal are taking their vigilante business to Gotham City, whether the new Dark Knight likes it or not—and they’re about to skip the introductions and get right to fighting!”

A-FORCE #4
Written By:  G. Willow Wilson & Marguerite Bennett
Art By:  Jorge Molina
Price:  $3.99
Publisher:  Marvel Comics
Release Date:  September 9th, 2015
55e49497247e7

A-Force is one of the many Secret Wars tie-ins I look forward to reading.  It connects closely to the overall Secret Wars story, while including key character moments and brilliant art.  I am glad that the team will be continuing in the All-New, All-Different Marvel universe.  Below is the synopsis:

“With the fate of Arcadia hanging in the balance, a traitor in A-FORCE’s ranks is revealed! But why would she sell out her teammates?”

JOURNEY TO STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS – SHATTERED EMPIRE #1
Written By:  Greg Rucka
Art By:  Marco Checchetto

Release Date:  September 9th, 2015

The excitement level for all things Star Wars is at a fervor pitch.  Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Shattered Empire #1 will be the first Star Wars comic set in the timeline between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.  There are sure to be clues sprinkled in for The Force Awakens.  Plus it reunites Greg Rucka and Marco Checchetto.  Below is the synopsis:

“High above the forest moon of Endor, the Rebel Alliance makes their desperate last stand against the might of the Empire. Though they are successful in the destruction of the second Death Star, the Empire is far from beaten. Now, follow Shara Bey, an A-Wing pilot in the Rebel Fleet in the days following the Battle of Endor. Though their super weapon has been destroyed, Shara will discover that just how dangerous and unpredictable a shattered Empire can be!”
