#kliqsoftheweek For 9/16/2015

Welcome to a new segment called #kliqsoftheweek.  I started a trend of tweeting comics I am looking forward to using this hashtag.  This weekly article will take a look at the five comics I am anticipating the most for New Comic Book Day!  Picking just five comics to gush over is no small feat, so make sure to chime in with your picks in the Comments section below.

D4VE was a hilarious series from IDW Publishing starring D4VE, a former robot war hero who is stuck in a deadend job with a wife and stepson he doesn’t always get along with.  Robots have conquered the Earth.  D4VE daydreams of his glory days, but must once again step up and prove he can be the robot he once was.

Stay tuned to this week’s “Comic Book Chronicles” as we’ll have the creator of D4VE, Ryan Ferrier, on as a special guest.

Meet The Paybacks!  When superheroes borrow money to finance their heroic exploits and fail to repay their debts, The Paybacks (superhero repo men and women) are sent in to collect.  The Paybacks is a satirical take on the superhero genre.  There are a few visual shoutouts to the 90’s and big pouches and accessories.  The Paybacks spins out of another Dark Horse series, Buzzkill.  We even had the co-writers, Donny Cates and Eliot Rahal, on as guest on a previous “Comic Book Chronicles” that you can watch and listen to here.

STAR WARS #9
Story:  Jason Aaron
Art:  Stuart Immonen
Price:  $3.99
Publisher:  Marvel Comics
Release Date:  September 16, 2015

Jason Aaron continues to add to the Star Wars mythos.  Who knew Han Solo had a wife?!  Sana Solo has tracked down Han and Leia and is set on turning them over to the Imperials.  As one superstar artist (John Cassaday) leaves, another enters (Stuart Immonen).

It would be easy to dismiss these new stories in-between the original movies.  That would be a mistake, as new seeds are planted that could bear fruit in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and beyond.

MARTIAN MANHUNTER #4
Written By:  Rob Williams
Art By:  Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira
Price:  $2.99
Publisher:  DC Comics
Release Date:  September 16, 2015

There is an interesting mystery building in Martian Manhunter.  What is tying J’onn J’onzz to these new individuals from across the globe?  A martian invasion is underway.  Rob Williams, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, and the entire creative team have taken a character in Martian Manhunter, who I never cared about, and made him compelling and worthy of his own solo series.

TOKYO GHOST #1
Story By:  Rick Remender
Art By:  Sean Gordon Murphy & Matt Hollingsworth
Price:  $3.50
Publisher:  Image Comics
Release Date:  September 16, 2015

Rick Remender and Sean Gordon Murphy have carved out a nice niche for themselves over at Image.  Remender has his creator-owned series Deadly Class, Low, and Black Science.  Murphy has Chrononauts.  All four are top-quality projects, and Tokyo Ghost looks to be in the same vein.

It is set in the year 2089 and society has become addicted to technology.  One can look to how we are with our smartphones to see this as a believable future.  Technology is big business, so when the last remaining country not to adopt it (Tokyo) doesn’t comply, Constables Led Dent and Debbie Decay are sent out to get Tokyo in line.

Honorable Mention:  Infinity Gauntlet #4
