Review: WE ARE ROBIN #3

Letters:  Jared Fletcher

When we last left the cast of We Are Robin, the team had come across bombs hidden along Gotham train tracks.  Stopping these bombs from going off would be easy for Batman and Robin.  For a bunch of street kids with no training, trying to make a difference…..not so easy.

What I Liked

For a bunch of young teenagers who barely know each other, they sure do work well together.  They all have the same goals.  They leave their egos at the door to live up to the symbol of “Robin”.  Even new recruits we haven’t met are brought aboard and seamlessly fit in.

Being that they are new to vigilantism, I felt like I was one of the Robins while reading.  Would I have the courage to defuse a bomb?  To fight an angry mob?  In theory its nice to think and say I would.  But to be put in those situations is another case entirely.

In issues one and two, the Robins have been off on their own getting into trouble.  This issue brings them into the crosshairs of a very special guest star.  It is pretty easy to guess who would take an interest in these kids activities, but I’ll keep it spoiler-free just in case.

While being a Robin may look glamorous, it still comes with risks.  By the end, it appears that not everyone makes it out alive.  It may sound cruel, but I hope this death sticks.  A story of a group of kids risking their lives without any guidance or supervision should have real life consequences.

Jorge Corona and Rob Haynes’ art is a perfect match for We Are Robin.  There is a youthful exuberance to their pencil work.  I could not really tell that one did the breakdowns and the other penciled over it.  Very seamless.

The epilogue finally reveals who is pulling the team’s strings from The Nest.  I wonder why this person chose to be their puppetmaster.  I am sure this character is too, after the apparent death of one of the Robins.  Hopefully we will get an explanation next issue.

What I Didn’t Like

We are getting to the point where there are almost too many characters to keep track of.  The only Robin I know by first name/codename is Duke Thomas.  We just got introduced to the others in issue two, and issue three reveals a few more.  This is where having a recap page would come in handy.  A quick profile photo and name next to it would go a long way.
