Review: NEW AVENGERS #33

Writer:  Jonathan Hickman
Artist:  Mike Deodato
Color Artist:  Frank Martin
Letterer:  VC’s Joe Caramagna
Publisher:  Marvel Comics

EVERYTHING ENDS!!  EVERYTHING DIES!!  That has been the slogan for Jonathan Hickman‘s Avengers/New Avengers titles heading into Secret Wars.  This week sees the conclusions to both comics as they lead into Marvel’s summer blockbuster event.

New Avengers #33 can be seen as a two-part story with Avengers #44.  New Avengers deals with the origin of how Doctor Doom got involved with incursions and becoming Rabum Alal, and what Molecule Man’s role in everything is.

What I Liked

As someone not familiar with Molecule Man, it was helpful to see him play such a prominent role here.  It is interesting that with thousands of realities in the multiverse, Molecule Man remains the same throughout them all.  A “bomb” as he calls it.

It helps that readers will get real answers to many questions regarding the incursions.  These questions have been around for the last two years, since the beginning of Hickman’s run.  That cannot be underestimated.  We even find out how the White and Black Swans were created.

Mike Deodato and Frank Martin bring the right amount of drama and a feeling of tension to the proceedings.  There is a lot of exposition from Doom and Molecule Man, so the art has to keep the pressure building.

What I Didn’t Like

My experience with Hickman stories is they can be hard to follow.  There are a lot of high-concept ideas to keep up with.  Throughout this issue I wasn’t sure if I was seeing scenes from the past or the present.  And just how long has Doom been on this mission playing God?  Is he immortal?
