Spider-Man Joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Talk about waking up to some great news.  I woke up, checked my Twitter account (@timdogg98), and was shocked to see that Sony and Marvel Studios have reached an agreement to share the movie rights to Spider-Man.

According to the release statement on Marvel.com, “the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, in a film that will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger. Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.”

Sony MCU Spider-Man

Also, there are discussions to integrate some of the MCU characters into future Spider-Man films.

So this is HUGE news.  For years fans have prayed that Marvel Studios could regain control of Spider-Man.  As the MCU movies were hit after hit, the recently rebooted Spider-Man movie franchise from Sony hasn’t been as well received with fans.

As an example of how huge this is, Marvel has already started moving around release dates for some of their future movies.  According to CBR“Thor: Ragnarok,” originally slated for the same date as the new Spidey movie, has moved to Nov. 3, 2017. “Black Panther” will now be released on July 6, 2018. “Captain Marvel” moves to Nov. 2, 2018 and “Inhumans” will shift to July 12, 2019.

Now to quickly discuss a dream scenario……that Marvel and Sony decide to bypass Peter Parker and introduce a Miles Morales Spider-Man.  We’ve seen enough of the adventures of Peter Parker.  Even though we haven’t seen him under the direction of Marvel Studios, introducing Miles would be a seismic risk that I think could pay off.  It would introduce more diversity among the superheroes.  Plus Miles is a great character.  If they decide to wait on Miles, he can always appear once Doctor Strange introduces parallel dimensions to the MCU.
