Review: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #9

Writer:  Dan Slott
Artist:  Olivier Coipel
Color Artist:  Justin Ponsor
Letterer:  Chris Eliopoulos
Publisher:  Marvel Comics

Spider-Verse has been billed to involve every Spider-character that Marvel can legally use.  We have seen some lead-in to this in the previous issues of Amazing Spider-Man and in the Edge of Spider-Verse mini-series.  The villain Morlun and his family have started hunting the Spiders all across the multiverse.

Various Spiders have started to band together to rescue one another, and to devise a plan to take the fight back to Morlun.  All they are missing is their secret weapon…..the 616 Spider-Man!

What I Liked

I have to first rain praise down on the artist, Olivier Coipel.  This is my first time getting to see him really illustrate Spider-Man.  Coipel has been one of Marvel’s go-to artists for their events.  He can take sequences, like Silk and Spider-Man in Peter Parker’s apartment and have both characters appear stoic.  The choices in camera angles in panels help with this.

Coipel also takes time to give each location a distinct feel.  We see the New York landscape, Mount Wundagore, and the lair of Morlun, Loomworld.  Not to mention the different universes that the different Spiders come from.

Justin Ponsor is one of the best color artists in the business.  He brings a cinematic approach to the color schemes.  It almost feels like the patented Michael Bay lens flares are being used (and I mean this as a compliment).

Writer Dan Slott wastes no time moving the story along.  Once we get to the 616 Spider-Man stopping a crime, we have guest-stars a-plenty.  Its enough to make Peter’s head spin as he’s confronted with different versions of himself.  It was great seeing all the different Spiders together on the same page.

In the promotion for Spider-Verse, Morlun was setup as the main villain.  However, we see that he’s bringing his family along for the ride.  His siblings and father make for formidable opponents.

What I Didn’t Like

The only thing this issue was missing was Otto Octavius, the Superior Spider-Man.  I speak for all fans of the Superior Spider-Man series that the confrontation between Otto and Peter should be epic.

Also, some more fleshing out of the villains would help new readers who are being introduced to them for the first time.  Why are they feeding on Spiders?

Summary

Amazing Spider-Man #9 kicks of Spider-Verse by assembling our heroes and villains.  The ending even takes us to one of the most popular Spiders to be introduced in recent memory.  We have to assume there will be more twists and turns to come as the story progresses.  And not every Spider will make it out of Spider-Verse alive.
