Review: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #3

Writer:  Dan Slott
Penciler:  Humberto Ramos
Inker:  Victor Olazaba
Colors:  Edgar Delgado
Letterer:  Chris Eliopoulos
Publisher:  Marvel Comics

Spider-Man made a lot of enemies while Otto Octavius was running around in the body.  One of those enemies was long-time partner and friend to Spider-Man, Black Cat.  After being humiliated and sent to prison by Spider-Man, Felicia Hardy has escaped and is looking for payback.

Also, Electro’s powers are out of control and causes damage that pulls in Peter Parker and his Parker Industries.

What I Liked

It is about time that Black Cat got some time in the limelight.  I would preferred she was working with Spider-Man, but beggars can’t be choosers.  Humberto Ramos pencils a beautiful Black Cat.  Ramos even fits her with a slight variation on her old costume.

Since the relaunch of Amazing Spider-Man, there has been a mysterious woman shown in a room with no windows.  She appears to be getting anxious and is wanting to step outside.  She gets very close to doing that, but is reminded by an individual that it wouldn’t be a smart idea.  According to future solicits, we won’t have to wait too long to learn just who this mystery woman is.

Readers who have missed the ol’ Parker humor get a large dose of it this issue.  When Otto was inside Peter’s body, he terrorized the employees of Parker Industries.  Now, Peter is trying to undo the damage Otto caused by being Mr. Good Guy.  Which is freaking out the employees even more by appearing bipolar.

What I Didn’t Like

While it isn’t fair to compare Amazing Spider-Man to Superior Spider-Man, it can’t be helped.  Every issue of SSM felt high-octane, and so far ASM has been keeping with the speed limit.  Part of this is because SSM had Doctor Octopus in the lead role, and readers never knew what to expect next.  Now we are back with the familiar Peter Parker, with an added loss of memory.

Superior Spider-Man is a hard act to follow.

Summary

As Amazing Spider-Man #3 comes to an end, Black Cat and Electro appear to be forming an alliance.  Our mystery woman is getting close to revealing herself.  Not to mention Anna Maria Marconi knowing the secret behind Peter/Otto/Spider-Man, and J. Jonah Jameson’s new job offer.

Business is picking up.
