James Tynion IV has made a name for himself over at DC Comics on the Batman line of comic books.  Now he is venturing off into the creator-owned realm with his new series The Woods with Boom! Studios.  The synopsis is a high school is transported to another planet/dimension, and a small group of the student body decides to leave the school to explore their new surroundings.

What I Liked

I enjoyed the straightforward storytelling by Tynion.  All of the characters introduced have a different voice and something different to bring to the story.  The mix of horror and adventure solidifies that this will not be a boring comic.  Even though there is a mystery of why and how the school got transported, the reader is given enough bread crumbs that we are not totally left in the dark.

The speed of the comic is another plus.  We don’t have to wait until the very end of the comic to change locations and discover this new land.

The art team of Michael Dialynas and Josan Gonzalez developed great panels including a lot of backgrounds, fully sculptured characters, and scary creatures.  Going from the typical high school to a dark, mysterious, almost haunted house style setting shows their range of skills.

What I Didn’t Like

There was actually nothing I could find to dislike.  I’m anxious to see what the creative team does in future issues to keep the mystery building.  Plus who will all live and who will die.

Summary

I heard going in that there would be horror elements in The Woods but it still shocked me to see actual deaths.  The main characters’ personalities were fleshed out, and we got to witness a small percentage of this world that our cast will explore.  Consider me intrigued to see where all this is heading.
