Review: ORIGINAL SIN #1

Writer:  Jason Aaron
Artist:  Mike Deodato
Publisher:  Marvel Comics

Original Sin is Marvel’s next foray into the summer blockbuster crossover event.  This is a story that Marvel teased years ago as part of a story in their Marvel Point One issue.  The premise is someone has murdered The Watcher, Uatu, on the moon, and stolen his eyes (along with various items from his base).  His eyes hold all the secrets of the Marvel Universe that The Watcher has witnessed over the years.

It’s a race to solve the case of The Watcher’s murder, while also keeping these many secrets from spilling out into the public.

What I Liked

Jason Aaron did a fine job introducing all our main players.  The Avengers (along with Nick Fury, Sr.) journey to the moon and find The Watcher’s body with a hole in his forehead.  One of my favorite moments is the beginning of the comic where Captain America, Wolverine, Black Widow and Nick Fury, Sr. are at a diner for “Steak Night”.  Mike Deodato gets extra points for adding a Quinjet in the parking lot.  Speaking of Deodato, his cosmic panels on the moon with Uatu’s comatose body bring an extra level of tension to the proceedings.

The investigative team that Fury pulls together manages to reach every corner of the Marvel universe.  That alone should be enough to pull in readers.  Original Sin should have something for everyone.

What I Didn’t Like

As much as I enjoyed “Steak Night” it felt too convenient that Fury just happened to be with The Avengers when Captain America got the call concerning The Watcher.  Does this exclude Fury as a possible suspect in the murder?

I know our heroes are used to death, but they seemed too matter-of-fact while standing around The Watcher’s body discussing how he was killed/who could have done it.

I can’t help but wonder if The Watcher’s base being ransacked is a way to re-introduce a ton of old Marvel weaponry (including one device that was used in this very issue).  Perhaps the Marvel cinematic universe has intentions on these devices popping up in future movies, and the comics want to put them back in front of readers to prepare.

Summary

A very fine opening salvo by Jason Aaron and Mike Deodato for Original Sin #1.  I can’t recall reading a story built around a murder mystery in the Marvel universe, so this will be a new experience.  Hopefully the reveal of the killer will be an “OMG” moment and worthy of building an entire event around.

Not to mention the various “sins” that will be brought to the surface.  This has the potential of launching so many new stories and taking characters in directions no one could ever guess.
