Review: AVENGERS #29

Publisher:   Marvel Comics

Original Sin promises to unleash deep, dark secrets upon the Marvel universe.  No book ties into big events more than Avengers.  The deep secret that comes to the forefront in Avengers #29 is that of the New Avengers Illuminati erasing Captain America’s memories of incursions and of the Illuminati reforming.  Cap remembers what was done to him by his alleged “friends”, and he’s not happy about it.

What I Liked

I love that long-time readers are starting to get resolution when it comes to early plot threads.  The tension between Captain America and Iron Man was off the charts.  Taking into account last issue, Jonathan Hickman has taken the kids gloves off.

You get extra payoff if you have been reading both Avengers and New Avengers.  Finally it looks like both books will start crossing over with one another.

Bringing Leinil Francis Yu onboard for pencil duties was a good choice.  Along with colors from Sunny Gho, the pages with Steve confronting Tony were filled with so much emotion.  The determination in Cap’s eyes was palpable.

What I Didn’t Like

The pages near the end involving the Time Gem were confusing to me.  I couldn’t tell what was happening, but that may have been on purpose.  In fact, the one fight scene could have been illustrated a bit better.  There was a lot of extra shadow in the panels that muted the action.

One more small gripe….it says the events in Avengers #29 take place after Original Sin #2.  It would have been nice if both books came out the same week since they crossover with one another.  There are possibly important plot points we are missing out on by not reading Original Sin #2 first.

Summary

Yes, we have seen Captain America vs. Iron Man done before (Civil War).  The circumstances are different this time however.  While we have internal strife amongst The Avengers, the issue ends in a rather peculiar place.  Hickman is building to something big in Avengers and New Avengers, and the spark starts here.
