Review: STARLIGHT #1

Writer:  Mark Millar
Artist:  Goran Parlov
Colorist:  Ive Svorcina
Letterer:  Marko Sunjic
Publisher:  Image Comics

Mark Millar has big plans for the superhero universe he plans on launching at Image Comics.  Inspired by Marvel, Millar’s new additions to his “Millarworld” universe will give fans an opportunity to get in on the ground floor.  The first comic to launch is Starlight, by Millar and artist Goran Parlov, colorist Ive Svorcina and letterer Marko Sunjic.  Starlight is the story of a man named Duke who ventures off into space to save an alien race.  After receiving many accolades, Duke returns back to Earth where he is not welcomed as a conquering hero.

What I Liked

What I liked about Starlight was the story was simple yet effective.  From the opening pages, Millar tells you everything you need to know.  Duke saved a planet/galaxy and their queen is fond of him, and back on Earth he’s aged and the excitement is over.  It’s a sci-fi space fantasy mixed with real world problems.

Art by Goran Parlov fits the style of the book.  Parlov and Svorcina illustrate a color unique landscape, and accurately display Duke during his different stages of life.  Whether its the youthful swashbuckler or mournful senior citizen.  Plus Duke comes across very likeable.

What I Didn’t Like

The majority of the story takes place on Earth.  It makes sense to save the majority of the space-adventures for later, as the comic progresses.  We spend time with Duke and his family, and experience what he has to deal with as someone who’s traveled the stars and no one believes him.  I can’t wait to see what happens as he goes back to his old exciting life.

Summary

If Mark Millar is planning on tying all his comic book franchises together under his “Millarworld” label, then Starlight is a worthy first step.  Duke is a protagonist readers can root for, and the sci-fi concept offers a lot of story possibilities.  Hopefully Millar keeps these titles coming out on a consistent schedule so we can learn how everything ties together.
