Review: SILVER SURFER #1

Storytellers:  Dan Slott and Michael Allred
Color Artist:  Laura Allred
Letterer:  VC’s Clayton Cowles
Publisher:  Marvel Comics

With the cosmic side of the Marvel universe getting a stronger focus, many people have been clamoring for a return to the monthly adventures of Silver Surfer.  A former herald of the world-eating Galactus, Silver Surfer wields the Power Cosmic and travels across the universe on his trusted board.  In this All-New Marvel NOW! launch, Silver Surfer will be joined by an Earth companion named Dawn.  In the introductory issue, we learn how their adventure together begins.

What I Liked

Dawn’s family background wasn’t what I was expecting, and in a good way.  The differences that Dan Slott uses between her and her sister Eve, along with the family business, help to build Dawn’s personality.  Being content with her place in life, and then being uprooted across the galaxies should surely have an effect on her.

Mike Allred was born to illustrate a quirky cosmic story.  Along with colors from his wife, Laura Allred, the two of them explore a hidden alien world called The Impericon.  The visual look of The Impericon alone demonstrates their level of professional artistry.

The mystery of what links Dawn and the Silver Surfer should be fun to watch play out.

What I Didn’t Like

Readers that are hardcore Silver Surfer and Mike Allred fans will love this.  During interviews and press leading up to the launch, the comparisons to Doctor Who (which I’ve never watched) kept coming up.  It may be these comparisons that have caused the book to not resonate with me like it surely will with others.  I need a reason to care about the Silver Surfer.  Maybe giving us a point-of-view character in Dawn will help.

Summary

Silver Surfer #1 soars to comic book stores this week.  This should scratch a different itch for Dan Slott that he doesn’t get to on his Spider-Man work.  I’m curious if this will stand on its own, or start to crossover with other cosmic titles.  I predict issues being light on action, but rich in character moments and comedy.  If you are a fan of the creative team and of Silver Surfer, then this will be a book you want to pick up.
