Review: SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #27

Writer:  Dan Slott
Penciler:  Giuseppe Camuncoli
Inker:  John Dell
Letterer:  Chris Eliopoulos
Color Artist:  Antonio Fabela
Publisher:  Marvel Comics

It’s all lead up to this!  We are reaching the end of The Superior Spider-Man.  ‘Goblin Nation’ begins the showdown between Otto/Spider-Man and the Green Goblin.  Plus there is the little matter of Peter Parker’s consciousness lurking around in the mindscape.

What I Liked

The very first thing I liked was the issue jumping ahead 31 days.  The reader is thrown headfirst into a city in chaos.  It’s fun to enter a story midway.  We get to skip unnecessary setup.  Plus we’ve had 20+ issues of setup.  We know what is in play here.  Great choice by Dan Slott.

Slott and Giuseppe Camuncoli team up to tell a two-sided story.  Camuncoli’s mindscape sequences with Peter have an otherworldly vibe to them.  The paneling throughout the comic builds suspense to the first face-to-face between Spider and Goblin.  Their confrontation didn’t go the way I would have pictured it, but that is not a bad thing.  Slott keeps the curveballs coming, along with utilizing story threads from previous arcs.

We learn new things regarding Peter’s situation as well.  Exactly how many of his memories are intact is a real surprise.

What I Didn’t Like

With five issues remaining, I am starting to wonder will Slott have enough room to tie up all the loose ends.  I have praised Superior Spider-Man for its frenetic pace, but the negative is it leaves little time for complete resolution.

Summary

Superior Spider-Man #27 moves along plot points, and Otto discovers how the Goblin Underground has escaped his sights for so long.  Has Otto’s narcissism allowed him to be one up’d by the Green Goblin?  Plus, Peter continues his saga to recover control of his body.
