Review: FURIOUS #1

Written By:  Bryan J.L. Glass

At the end of 2013, Dark Horse Comics started marketing a comic from the creative team of Bryan J.L. Glass and Victor Santos.  Furious tells the tale of a woman trying to do right in the world.  Along with this, it touches on the subject of celebrity and the power it brings along with it.  More and more people are becoming famous.  Be it via social media or reality TV.  What if a superhero faced the same challenges that celebrities do?  This is the question Furious presents.

What I Liked

I was intrigued by Furious once I started receiving the press emails from Dark Horse.  The art by Santos reminded me of Chris Samnee or Michael Oeming.  Santos’ art has a youthful, fresh vibe to it.

Glass crafts an opening tale with a mystery of who is Furious.  I enjoyed the scene in the convenience store.  Furious wants to do a good deed but even that becomes a hassle.  Humor mixed with serious overtones is welcomed in my comics.

What I Didn’t Like

It may have been me, but parts of the story lost me.  Furious’ identity was teased at the beginning of the book, then it alluded to something else about midway, only to come back full circle at the end.  I began to question whether I was interpreting the information correctly.  As the story progresses, we’ll hopefully learn more of what has made Furious, well….furious.

Summary

I believe Furious is a limited series.  It looks to touch on real world subjects like fame and anger-management.  The first issue is enjoyable.  Bryan J.L. Glass will be looked to build on the foundation and let readers learn more about Furious’ past, and how she plans to go about turning the public in her favor.
