Review: AVENGERS #25

Writer:  Jonathan Hickman
Artist:  Salvador Larroca
Color Artist:  Frank Martin
Letterer:  VC’s Cory Petit
Publisher:  Marvel Comics

With “Infinity” in our rearview mirror, Jonathan Hickman begins to setup the next phase of his massive story on Avengers.  Last issue’s 24.NOW introduced a time traveler and a rogue planet.  Issue 25 takes a page out of the All-New X-Men playbook with the original Avengers lineup.  But with a twist.

What I Liked

Salvador Larroca is the next superstar artist to join Avengers.  I’m glad to see him on another book to highlight his talent to a broader audience.  Colorist Frank Martin is able to display light and shadow to the pencil work which helps bring the panels to life.

Even though it seems Hickman is copying Brian Michael Bendis by bringing the original Avengers from the past to the present, all is not as it seems.  If you have been reading Hickman’s other Avengers book, New Avengers, then its obvious what is at play here.

What I Didn’t Like

I’ll keep coming back to this the more they pop up, but I’m just not feeling A.I.M. as a serious threat.  They have their own island and keep appearing in more and more Avengers comics.  Hopefully this leads to something big and makes me appreciate them more.

Summary

Aside from the tease regarding the fate of a certain Avenger above, Hickman is putting his personal spin on original teams being transplanted in the present.  A murder mystery is afoot!
