Review: JUSTICE LEAGUE 3000 #1

Plot:  Keith Giffen
Dialogue:  J.M. DeMatteis
Art, Interior Cover:  Howard Porter
Letterer:  Sal Cipriano
Colorists, Interior and Cover:  Hi-Fi

When DC Comics announced Justice League 3000 a large part of the Internet community rejoiced.  The book was supposed to be a reunion of the infamous creative team behind Justice League International.  Before Justice League 3000 launched, DC made a change of artist from Kevin MaGuire to Howard Porter, who did the character designs for the new team.

Speaking of the team, these five heroes look like the Justice League we are all familiar with.  But how could they be in this far-off future?

What I Liked

Howard Porter’s art is beautiful.  There is not a wasted panel or page to be found.  What I really appreciate is the level of detail in Porter’s work.  From backgrounds to costumes to landscapes, there is a lot to visually take in.

Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis share the plot and dialogue, respectively.  The standout characters I feel were the “Wonder Twins” Terry and Teri.  The name is a callback to the old cartoon Super Friends.  The brother/sister duo were our gateway to the Justice League team.  Through them we learn that this team was made, not born (literally).

What I Didn’t Like

I know the cool thing to do is show a team bicker and fight amongst themselves, instead of displaying teamwork.  Tensio and drama make for better stories.  Still, this plot device has been driven into the ground .

Also, is this really the future of the New 52 universe?  There are so many different Earth’s, the possibilities of which future this is are endless.

Summary

When Justice League 3000 #1 begins, we start with the mystery of how this future team exists.  By the end, we are given enough clues to start to form educated guesses.  Could these clues be red herrings to throw us off the true scent?  Is this Justice League really genetic clones of the original Leaguers?  We have to keep reading to find out.
