Review: SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #20

Writer:  Dan Slott
Penciler:  Giuseppe Camuncoli
Inker:  John Dell
Color Art:  Antonio Fabela
Letterer:  Chris Eliopoulos

Even with Dan Slott bringing Spider-Man 2099 into the present in a three-issue arc, Superior Spider-Man #20 was the comic that was hyped as being crucial to future stories.

Consequences and repercussions were promised.  Plus, we get Black Cat on the cover.  She hasn’t cross paths with Spider-Man since Otto Octavius occupied his body.  How much of a role does she play here?

What I Liked

I’ll always be here for Black Cat guest-appearances.  I feel she should have her own ongoing comic.  Black Cat is the equivalent of Catwoman for DC Comics and she has her own book.

Once again Slott manages to cram so much drama into these pages.  We’re given a glimpse back to the end of Amazing Spider-Man and a nod to a villain that has been scheming in the background of Superior Spider-Man.

Plus we get two important developments in the personal life of Peter Parker.  One positive and one negative.  I wonder if one will affect the other.  Just another deck to be added to Spider-Man’s house of cards.

Giuseppe Camuncoli‘s art is very nice here.  He has provided great pencil work on Superior Spider-Man while rotating art duties.  I like that his art isn’t a carbon copy of Humberto Ramos and Ryan Stegman’s, yet it still fits with the overall tone of the book.

What I Didn’t Like

Even though Black Cat appears in the comic, her role is very limited.  Perhaps seeds are being planted for something down the road, but for now I was left wanting more out of her.

The mystery villain of the book is a character I’m not familiar with.  This person has a connection to Otto Octavius so the interaction between them and Spider-Man should be fun to watch at least.

Summary

Slott did deliver some new surprises in Superior Spider-Man #20.  They may not have been as Earth-shattering as I thought they would be, but things do happen that should have lasting repercussions going forward.
