Review: INFINITY #5

Writer:  Jonathan Hickman
Artists:  Jerome Opena & Dustin Weaver
Color Artist:  Justin Ponsor
Letterer:  Chris Eliopoulos
Cover:  Adam Kubert & Laura Martin

Even though I haven’t understood everything Jonathan Hickman has been building in his Avengers series’, he has done a masterful job with Infinity.

We are nearing the end of the event series and things are starting to fall into place.  The space and Earth stories are converging, and at least two future plots are established.

What I Liked

Since Avengers #1 Hickman has been building the theme of an “Avengers World”.  I enjoyed that we see more of that theme here.  Along with visual aids!

More time is given to Thane, son of Thanos.  He recently had his latent Inhuman abilities manifest via exposure to Terrigen Mist.  He will be an important player in the Marvel universe moving further into “Inhumanity”.

I can’t decide whose art I love the most…Jerome Opena or Dustin Weaver.  I’d give the slight edge to Opena.  He has been killing it on the cosmic portions of Infinity.  His best work is on Captain America, who comes across as being stoic and focused.

What I Didn’t Like

It feels like the Illuminati’s part of Infinity has taken a backseat to the overall story.  Even following them in New Avengers it feels that the multiple Earths colliding has been slow-burning forever.

Also, is there a grander reason for the New Universe heroes being involved?  After reading Avengers you would have thought Star Brand would be the one turning the tide in the war against the Builders.  The Builders, for all their bravado, are being defeated pretty easily.

Summary

One more issue and Infinity will come to an end.  Of course, we also have two other tie-in issues of Avengers to get through before the end.  I’d assume those two issues of Avengers will deal with the team in space preparing to go back to Earth and fight the invading forces of Thanos.

Infinity #5 can be seen as setting up plots that will be dealt with in a new Avengers ongoing comic (Avengers World) and the next  Marvel house banner “Inhumanity”.
