Review: FOREVER EVIL #2

Writer:  Geoff Johns
Penciller:  David Finch
Inker:  Richard Friend
Colorist:  Sonia Oback
Letterer:  Carlos M. Mangual

The Justice League is dead!  Long live the Crime Syndicate!  After the events of Trinity War, all the Justice League teams are gone and the Crime Syndicate (along with the Secret Society) are ruling the land.

With the prominent heroes of the DC Universe gone, its up to the Teen Titans and other unlikely individuals to bring the Crime Syndicate’s evil reign to an end.

What I Liked

With the heroes gone, writer Geoff Johns has chosen to make Lex Luthor the featured player.  This will be a great opportunity for readers to get acquainted with the New 52 version of the villain.

Johns let us spend more time with the Crime Syndicate as well.  Their personalities were on display.  Owlman, the strategist.  Ultraman, the leader.  Power Ring, the coward.  Johnny Quick, impulsive violence.

David Finch‘s art suits a dark, gritty book like Forever Evil.  Finch is very detailed with his penciling, and the colorist Sonia Oback does a fine job matching the dark colors with the tone of the comic.

What I Didn’t Like

As a fan of teen heroes, it was nice to see the Teen Titans attempt to fill the shoes left behind by the Justice League.  I guess it shouldn’t come as a surprise how quickly they were defeated.  But it was still a letdown.

The only other negative I’ll mention is the month-long delay between Forever Evil #1 and #2.  I know it was to showcase “Villains Month”, but I feel DC lost all the momentum they built from the “Trinity War” ending/Forever Evil beginning/Nightwing unmasking.

Summary

Forever Evil #2 was the reader’s opportunity to see which heroes would stand and fight against the Crime Syndicate, along with what machinations Lex Luthor has planned to combat the evil super-team.  We also find out that not every member of the Justice League has perished.  There is a sliver of hope that our heroes are still alive.  Perhaps in Forever Evil #3 or other tie-in books this month we’ll get to learn what happened between the end of “Trinity War” and Forever Evil #1.
