Review: MORNING GLORIES #30

“Season Two”
Words:  Nick Spencer
Art:  Joe Eisma
Cover:  Rodin Esquejo
Colors:  Paul Little
Letters:  Johnny Lowe
Publisher:  Image Comics

I was unfamiliar with Morning Glories before I picked up issue 30.  My reasoning for giving it a try is all thanks to writer Nick Spencer and an interview with him on CBR.

Reading about kids with powers attending a school, along with the book being broken up into seasons was enough to pique my interest.  Plus this appears to be a perfect jumping-on point.

What I Liked

This was a very accessible book for a first-time reader of Morning Glories.  Nick Spencer has to be commended for achieving this.  What helped was focusing the story on Irina.  We got a glimpse at her complicated upbringing.  She came across as sympathetic and full of anger.  Irina looks to be the problem-child of the school.

The art team of Joe Eisma and Paul Little laid out some wonderful pages.  I particularly enjoyed the fight sequences.  I wasn’t familiar with Eisma before Morning Glories, but he is an artist I will be keeping an eye on going forward.

What I Didn’t Like

With this being an Irina-focused story, the complaint can be made that we don’t get to see the rest of the cast.  For a beginning reader like myself, the argument can be made that introducing the entire cast would have made for a much more daunting reading experience.  Plus, Spencer has said that these next few issues will focus on individual cast members.

Summary

I’m glad I gave Morning Glories a chance.  Irina is a character that I look forward to learning more about.  Plus there are many more characters that I have to get acquainted to.  After missing 29 prior issues, I now have to wonder if it is worth going back to pick up the trades to get caught up.

You should give it a try. Morning Glories is an outstanding and really intelligent title. Each issue leaves you wanting more and with a lot of things to think about.

    • If the previous issues are as thought-provoking as #30, then I probably will give the series overall a try. Thanks for reading!
