Marvel Rapid Reviews for 9/11/2013

I’m trying something different with this week’s reviews.  It’s been busy around the Timdogg Pound so instead of doing reviews for individual comics, I’m going to group this week’s reviews by publishers.  First up is Marvel Comics.

Mighty Avengers #1 cover

MIGHTY AVENGERS #1
Writer:  Al Ewing
Penciler:  Greg Land
Inker:  Jay Leisten
Colorist:  Frank D’Armata
Letterer:  Cory Petit

What I Liked

The reasoning for the various heroes to assemble together (Infinity) felt natural.  We got to spend ample time with each team member.  Greg Land’s art was the best that I’ve seen it.  Mostly because of how he constructed the action scenes.  Banter between Superior Spider-Man and Luke Cage was humorous.  I really liked the lettering from Cory Petit when each hero was introduced.

What I Didn’t Like

The new Power Man is annoying.  It’s mostly because of how he was written by Al Ewing.  I enjoyed everyone else’s depiction from Ewing, but Power Man’s needs fine tuning.  Will Spider Hero turn out to be the mysterious Ronin, who is set to join the team in the future?

Fearless Defenders #9 cover

FEARLESS DEFENDERS #9
Written By:  Cullen Bunn
Art By:  Will Sliney
Color Art By:  Veronica Gandini
Lettered By:  VC’s Clayton Cowles

What I Liked

Guest appearance by the Dude Bros!  Great idea by Cullen Bunn to have the exes of all the Defenders show up for an intervention issue.  I had more fun reading about the boys’ devise a plan for the intervention than I had with the main cast.  Hercules needs to be back in an ongoing title.

What I Didn’t Like

Some of the fight sequences by Will Sliney were hard to follow at times.  How long before the Annabelle/Valkyrie dynamic grows old?  We’ve already had multiple issues where them switching places during battle has popped up.

Ultimate Comics The Ultimates #30 cover

ULTIMATE COMICS THE ULTIMATES #30
Writer:  Joshua Hale Fialkov
Penciler, Inker (14, 19, 20):  Carmine Di Giandomenico
Inker:  Lorenzo Ruggiero
Colorist:  Jim Charalampidis
Lettering & Production:  VC’s Clayton Cowles

What I Liked

EVERYTHING!  The “Disassembled” arc has been fantastic, and this is coming from a new reader of The Ultimates.  It’s been a rollercoaster filled with surprises around every corner.  Joshua Hale Fialkov has a perfect handle on this cast.  I especially loved what he put Tony Stark through.  The reveal of Kang made sense.  The art from Carmine Di Giandomenico increased my enjoyment.  Especially since this was my first time experiencing his work.  Nicely tied into “Age of Ultron” fallout.  The scope of “Disassembled” felt like an epic movie.

What I Didn’t Like

Reed Richards was shown as a prisoner at the end of the book but what happened to Hulk?  Hopefully I haven’t jumped into the Ultimate universe right before it ends during “Cataclysm”.
