Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #22

Story:  Kevin Eastman, Bobby Curnow & Tom Waltz
Script:  Tom Waltz
Art:  Mateus Santolouco
Colors:  Ronda Pattison
Letters:  Shawn Lee
Editor:  Bobby Curnow
Publisher:  IDW Publishing

I have heard many great things about IDW’s relaunched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series.  There isn’t a better jumping-on point than with issue 22 and the start of the 7-part “City Fall” story arc.  Everything from the past 21 issues has led to this.  As someone who grew up watching the very first original animated show, to collecting the action-figures, I went into #22 with high hopes.  I wasn’t disappointed.

What I Liked

I really enjoyed the story by Tom Waltz and Mateus Santolouco’s art.  As a new reader, I wasn’t completely lost.  There were a couple of characters I wasn’t aware of, but they weren’t crucial to the story.  As long as I know who the four Turtles are, Master Splinter, April O’Neil, and Casey Jones, I’m good.  Every character’s personality matched how they’ve been portrayed in other media, whether that is a cartoon or movie.

I like that part 1 of “City Fall” starts off with a BANG! with Casey being abducted by the Foot Clan, the Turtles in pursuit, Casey’s injury, and ends with Leonardo being the Foot Clan’s true target.  There wasn’t a dull moment to be found.

What I Didn’t Like

The only negative thing I could find was how a rival gang of the Foot Clan, The Savate, were referenced at the beginning of the story but never made an actual appearance.  All we learn is some history on The Savate and how Shredder wants to take them down.

Summary

From the interviews and press images for “City Fall”, this looks to be an epic event.  If you haven’t been keeping up with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you’ll want to start here.  Will the Turtles be the same once all the dust settles?  We’ll have to wait to find out.
