Superior Spider-Man #3 Review

Writer:  Dan Slott
Artist:  Ryan Stegman
Color Art:  Edgar Delgado
Letterer:  VC’s Chris Eliopoulos

Superior Spider-Man #3 starts to show our first supporting cast member having doubts about this new “Superior” Spider-Man.  Carlie Cooper remembers’s Doctor Octopus pleading with her in The Amazing Spider-Man #700 that he wasn’t Doc Ock at all.  He was really Spider-Man stuck in Doc Ock’s body.  As Spider-Man faces off against one of his oldest foes in the Vulture, Carlie wonders if the man she formerly dated and that wears the Spider-Man suit is really who he says he is.

What I Liked

It’s about time that someone who is close to Peter Parker starts to have their doubts concerning his new attitude.  Plus it makes sense since Carlie is a police officer.  She can start treating this as a case that needs to be solved.

So as you can see from the image above, Dan Slott decides to take a jab at Batman by debuting the Spider-signal.  This sparked a lot of debate online.  Some saw it as Slott taking a shot at how ridiculous the Bat-signal is.  Others saw it as a harmless joke.  I’ll let you decide which to believe.  I will say it’s funny to see Spider-Man have J. Jonah Jameson wrapped around his finger.

Vulture and Otto Octavius have been comrades for many years.  They were in the original incarnation of the Sinister Six together.  So it makes sense that Otto would want to help his old friend.  One of my favorite parts of this book was Otto discovering one of Vulture’s dirty secrets.  This really changes the type of relationship the two share.

What I Didn’t Like

Otto kept saying he had special plans for Vulture.  Do we ever find out what those plans are?  They couldn’t have been to merely pay Vulture to go away for good.

Something else that came up is how Peter can piggyback on Otto’s memories and view them for himself.  This made me think that since Peter can witness Otto’s memories, shouldn’t he be able to look in Otto’s mind and know what diabolical plans are up his sleeve?  Maybe Peter can only access Otto’s memories when Otto is the one bringing the memory to the forefront.  I feel this is one of the secrets Slott will reveal as the book moves along.

Summary

I like where Superior Spider-Man is going.  This is a new story we’re experiencing.  This “Superior” Spider-Man is becoming a ruthless one.  The more of Otto’s personality starts to come through, the more people start to question what has happened to everyone’s favorite wall-crawler.  Can Carlie Cooper solve the case of the Superior Spider-Man?  We’ll have to keep reading to find out.
