The buildup is over. No more hype. Dan Slott can finally go into hiding, because The Amazing Spider-Man #700 is finally released. The story of Doctor Octopus switching bodies with Spider-Man and the fallout is revealed. Just who will be Spider-Man going into the Superior Spider-Man series in Marvel NOW!?
What I Liked
This was a long issue. Marvel made sure to give readers their money’s worth with this story. Humberto Ramos was once again on top of his game. Ramos has to be one of my favorite Marvel artists right now. Slott does a good job of putting Otto Octavius’ voice inside the body of Peter Parker. Seeing Peter be dismissive and condescending was hilarious. Ramos even adds some edge to Peter in his facial expressions.
As to how #700 ends, our hero Peter Parker, meets his end inside the dying body of Doctor Octopus. Before Peter dies, Otto gets to see all of Peter’s memories flash before his eyes. I liked that each flashback took place with Otto’s body taking the place of Peter’s. Otto was overcome with all the losses that Peter has experienced in his life. The sacrifices that Peter has encountered help to inspire Otto to carry on the Spider-Man mantle for Peter. Except Otto will be a better Spider-Man…..a SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN!
What I Didn’t Like
With all the hype leading up to #700, speculation raged online as to who would be the Superior Spider-Man. Would it be Ben Reilly, Miguel O’Hara from Spider-Man 2099? In the end, the story held true and it is Doctor Octopus who will be Superior Spider-Man. My guess was that it would be a combination of Peter and Otto’s brainwaves occupying the same body. But it looks like Peter has passed away and is gone. For now. Because we all know this is not the last we will hear from Peter Parker.
This should last about a year I would guess. My next guess is that residue of Peter’s brainwaves still exist in his body’s brain. Eventually Peter’s consciousness will start to come to the surface and then a battle for control of the body will take place.
Majority of fans will be outraged with the outcome of The Amazing Spider-Man #700. I’m more of the mindset to sit back and enjoy the new stories that can be told with Doctor Octopus running the show. Since we all know this will not be a permanent thing, why not enjoy the story for what it is.
