All-New X-Men #4 Review

Writer:  Brian Michael Bendis
Pencils:  Stuart Immonen

All-New X-Men #4 continues it’s positive momentum as Marvel NOW!’s most successful title.  This issue we finally see the original X-Men from the past confront present-day Cyclops.  How will the Cyclops react to seeing his younger, purer self?  And how will he react to seeing a younger Jean Grey alive?

What I Liked

Once again, Stuart Immonen’s artwork is a pleasure to see on the book.  There is one image of all the faces of the original X-Men, present-day Cyclops and Magneto all together in one collage that conveys the tension during this confrontation.

Jean Grey cannot handle seeing the type of man the love of her life has transformed into.  With the original X-Men in our present, it mostly comes down to seeing how young Jean Grey and Scott Summers handle things.  Young Beast would be right behind them, considering his present-day self is the one responsible for bringing them here, and his ailment with his mutation.

I also like how everyone in the original X-Men has a different opinion on them being in the present.  There is one in particular who seems very determined that they should go back home and forget everything they have witnessed.  Almost to a point where I start to wonder if this character could possibly be influenced in future issues.

Present-day Iceman has a quote that stuck with me.  He says to Kitty Pryde, “I wonder what what Scott thought of himself”.  This is what All-New X-Men was created for….finding out what younger Scott thinks of older Scott and his actions.

What I Didn’t Like

I envisioned more out of the altercation between the original X-Men and Cyclops’ mutant revolution.  There was hardly any dialogue between the two groups.  The majority of the dialogue took place internally between the characters.

Cyclops and Emma Frost deduce that these are the original X-Men too easily.  I know they have seen a lot in their years as heroes, but there could have been more doubt put into their minds as to whether what they are really seeing is the real deal.

I hope there is some explanation as to how Jean Grey can go from displaying much power in her time, to being brought to the present and all-of-a-sudden her powers explode.  How come this isn’t happening to any of the other original X-Men?  It is like she is suffering post-Phoenix Force also.

What are your thoughts on All-New X-Men so far?  What do you think about the original X-Men being in our present?  What will come from Beast’s secondary mutation?  Make sure to let your thoughts be known in the Comments section below.
