X-Men Legacy #1 Review: Marvel NOW!

*SPOILER FREE REVIEW*

Writer:  Simon Spurrier
Penciler:  Tan Eng Huat

We have now reached our first oddball title of Marvel NOW!.  With Professor X meeting his untimely death during Avengers vs. X-Men, the powers-that-be at Marvel decided it would be a good idea to have a title focus on Charles Xavier’s son, Legion.  Legion is mostly known for his multiple personalities and unique haircut.

I haven’t kept up with the comings and goings of Legion.  If memory serves me correct, I believe he was featured in an X-Men comic a year or so ago.  In issue one we find him at peace, keeping his split personalities in-check.  We are also introduced to what I am assuming is the main villain of the first arc.

What I Liked

After seeing the cover to issue one, Tan Eng Huat’s art had me worried.  Thankfully the interior artwork was pleasing to the eyes.  I am not familiar with any of Huat’s previous work, but X-Men Legacy was very clean, along with the coloring and inking.  Legion doesn’t seem like a bad character either.  He was very humble and at peace with himself.  Being mostly known for causing the “Age of Apocalypse”, Legion is now being setup as a hero.  He has many faults, which should make him relatable for fans, which will hopefully start rooting for the underdog.

What I Didn’t Like

I honestly have no idea what was taking place in this book when it came to the villain.  Was the villain on another planet, on the astral plane, or somewhere else entirely?  Going into X-Men Legacy I did not have high hopes, and those hopes did not rise after completing issue one.  The only thing that can make me have interest quickly is if Legion starts acquiring a supporting cast of established mutants and X-Men.

I’d be curious to hear everyone else’s thoughts on X-Men Legacy #1.  Did you like it more than me, or about the same?  Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

In all my life, I’ve NEVER met anyone who liked Legion. Marvel has tried VERY hard to make us care about him over the last 20 years, but it just never sticks. After all, he’s the reason that the original Age of Apocalypse happened. He thought he’d be a good son and go back in time to take out his dad’s archenemy. Instead, he ended up killing Xavier (for, like, the 3rd time at that point), which resulted in AoA. After that story ended, he pretty much disappeared. Then, he popped up back during Excalibur after Genosha was destroyed. No one cared. Then, he popped up in the most recent New Mutants relaunch, and still no one cared. Not really sure what they hope to accomplish giving him his own series. NO ONE CARES ABOUT HIM.
