Thoughts & Theories on Amazing Spider-Man #698 Revelation – SPOILERS

So like the title states, this post will contain spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #698.  If you would like to read my non-spoiler review, please click here.  So last warning, if you DO NOT want to be spoiled then don’t continue reading.

LAST CHANCE TO BAIL OUT!!!

Okay then.  So in issue 698 we learn that Otto Octavius has switched bodies with Peter Parker.  Octavius has retained all of Peter’s memories, and now Peter is trapped in Octavius’ dying body.  It appears that Peter passes away in Octavius’ body, and we are left with a brand new Spider-Man.

These big surprises always turn out to be something obvious that we never seem to notice.  If you go back and reread 698 you can pick up little hints in Spider-Man’s and Peter Parker’s dialogue, like referring to Aunt May as that “sweet old woman” and being in awe at Spider-Man’s memories and accomplishments.

Now time for some quick thoughts and questions I have:

Did Peter Parker really die?  I know the heart monitor flatlined, but the paramedics rushed in to revive him and never pronounced him dead.  So when I read it, I took it as Peter will be fighting for his life in #699 and maybe #700.

Will Octavius be influenced by Peter’s memories?  Just as Scarlet Spider has the Parker gene embedded in him to do good, could the same happen to Octavius?  With a fresh new start on life, this could be Octavius’ opportunity to do good in the world.

Or, could a small piece of Peter’s consciousness be left behind in his body, ready to fight Octavius for control?  Perhaps we will be left with a split-personality Peter Parker.  And will any of his supporting cast notice a change with Peter?

How did Doctor Octopus switch bodies with Spider-Man? And when did the switch take place? Was it right after “Ends of the Earth”?

If you have read Amazing Spider-Man #698 and have any theories on where things will go, or if you just want to share your feelings on this revelation, please leave a comment below.

My question is….how did Doc Ock do it?

  • Already thinking of ways the real Peter Parker can get out of this pickle. Signs seem to indicate he might not at all, but you have to wonder how Morbius The Living Vampire and a host of other Spidey villains will play into this as we approach #700. No way that Peter just croaks off-panel like that, there’s more coming…

This was a fantastic issue, however– I was stunned and had to re-read it 5 times today. I will be checking the back issues to see where exactly the switch took place. The early seeds were planted in #600, but was it at the close of End of The Earth? Sooner than that? Spider-Island? This gets even more interesting given how long Slott had this in motion.

    SLOTT!!!!!!!!!!!
I always pick up my pull list on Sunday, so I read this late last night and thought maybe I was too tired to comprehend what was going on.  I too am going to go back and see what clues there are in the prior stories. One big clue I remembered while I was reading this issue was that Pete recognized that the tech he was developing for Horizon was similar to the stuff used by Doc Ock during Ends of the Earth.  There is a good starting point I think.
