Avengers #33 Review

*SPOILER FREE REVIEW*

Writer:  Brian Michael Bendis
Pencils:  Terry Dodson

“End Times” continues as the Avengers must rescue an old teammate in trouble and find their way back home.  As with all Brian Michael Bendis books, it seems not much really happens this issue.  Sure, there is witty dialogue and some action, but this is meant to merely move the story along to it’s conclusion and relaunch in Marvel NOW!

What I Liked

Even though I make jokes about Bendis’ writing, he does a great job at writing touching moments.  Whether they be humorous or heartwarming.  Seeing two particular Avengers interact after so many years was a delight.  Terry Dodson illustrates so much in one panel with a simple smile.  Red Hulk and Vision have a witty exchange in a park also.

What I Didn’t Like

The main villain, Lord Gouzar, is generic as they come.  I am not sure if he was created for this story or if he’s an existing villain.  Either way, there is not much to him.  Captain America sums Lord Gouzar up perfectly …..”Bad guy.  That’s all I need to know.”  Even the Avengers don’t take him seriously.

The issue also ends abruptly.  There is fighting, and then “To Be Concluded.”  Okay, fine, whatever gets us closer to Jonathan Hickman’s Marvel NOW! Avengers.

Avengers #33 was a so-so issue.  If you’ve been a long-time reader of Bendis’ run, of course you will want to see how it ends.  For me, I am ready to see what Jonathan Hickman and Jerome Opena do with this franchise.  However, I am excited to read Bendis’ All-New X-Men.  Everything right now just feels like one big placeholder.
