Avengers Assemble #8 Review

*Spoiler Free Review*

Writer:  Brian Michael Bendis
Penciler:  Mark Bagley

Avengers Assemble #8 wraps up the first arc on the newly launched series following Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.  The series was launched to give fans of the blockbuster movie a title that looked familiar to them.  It follows the members of the movie (Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Hawkeye, and Black Widow) and also deals with Thanos, who was shown in the post-credits scene.

The Avengers are aided by the Guardians of the Galaxy, who also are receiving their own cinematic movie in Marvel’s “Phase Two” initiative.  Both teams must work together to stop Thanos, who has gotten his hands on a cosmic cube.

What I Liked

Iron Man gets to show off his genius by coming up with a plan to stop Thanos.  Our “movie” Avengers, along with many other members, team up to lay the smackdown on Thanos.  The Guardians of the Galaxy are formally introduced to what is presumably a new audience.  Finally, Tony Stark plants seeds for news that was formally released at this weekend’s New York Comic-Con.

What I Didn’t Like

There was not much to dislike thankfully.  Mark Bagley can do no wrong when it comes to penciling.  The book is filled with the typical Bendis dialogue.  At this point, you’re either used to it or not.  It didn’t detract from the overall story.

This is the last issue for both Bendis and Bagley.  Bendis is moving on to All-New X-Men (and another book announced at NYCC), and Bagley will be joining Matt Fraction on Fantastic Four.  The new creative team will be Kelly Sue DeConnick and Stefano Caselli. I am looking forward to seeing Stefano Caselli back as regular artist on a title.

Make sure to leave comments below on Avengers Assemble.  Whether you’re a longtime Avengers fan, or a new reader who came over from watching the Marvel movies, your opinion is appreciated.
