Safe House: Movie Review

Something dawned on me recently.  I never thought of myself as a Denzel Washington fan.  Not because I don’t enjoy his movies, but because my first thought was that I haven’t seen many of his movies over the years.  Which is only half true.  I have not seen many of Denzel’s early movies, but I have seen the majority of his movies over the last 10 years (Man on Fire, Training Day, American Gangster, Book of Eli, Unstoppable, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, etc.)

So to keep this recent trend going, and after seeing the trailers, I decided to go see Safe House.  It stars Denzel Washington alongside Ryan Reynolds.  Washington plays Tobin Frost, a former CIA agent who went rogue nine years ago.  Reynolds plays Matt Weston, who is the CIA agent “housekeeper” for the safe house that Frost is sent to when he’s captured.  Something happens at the safe house that causes Frost and Weston to leave and have to work together to stay alive.  As to how Frost ends up at Weston’s safe house, and what happens there, well I’ll let you find that out for yourself.

Safe House follows the movie formulas of “government conspiracy” combined with “unlikely duo putting their differences aside and working together”.  Washington is the grizzled vet who plays mind games with the inexperienced Weston.  The action is stellar and moves at a fast pace.  There is a mystery as to why the bad guys are so interested in Frost, but about halfway through the movie it becomes obvious.

If you are in the mood for a movie filled with action and intrigue, then I would recommend seeing Safe House.  Again, story is straight-forward, but plenty of action.

I like how you phrased it as “something happened” at the safe house.  Ha!  That’s pretty spot on from what I thought.  It was OK, and the action sequences were great and I really enjoyed Denzel’s performance, but I was expecting more of a psychological thriller with a ton of twists and turns.

    • I wasn’t expecting a psychological thriller so that’s probably why I wasn’t disappointed with anything.  Everything I thought it was going to be, it ended up being.  Was still fun though!
