Chronicle: Movie Review

When the first trailer hit for Chronicle I didn’t know what to make of it.  It’s shot using various handheld cameras by the actors (I’ve never been crazy about this style.  I passed on seeing Cloverfield for this very reason).  But as the build for the movie increased, and I saw the three main characters using their powers in various commercials and trailers, I knew I had to see it.

Quick synopsis – the movie stars three high school students Andrew, Matt, and Steve.  Andrew is the socially awkward outcast, Matt is his cousin, and Steve is popular and running for Class President.  At a local rave, the three encounter something unexplainable (no spoilers, I’ll let you find that out when you go see it) and the after-effects leave them with special telekinetic abilities.

As you can imagine, adolescents with unique abilities are overjoyed while also struggling to cope with such power.  It really takes you back to the mantra from Spider-Man, “With great power comes great responsibility.”  Superpowers may be cool and all, but they must not be used lightly.  Growing up as an outcast, the powers have the biggest affect on Andrew.  As the movie progresses we see his evolution down the dark side.

At a brisk hour and 23 minutes, I recommend you check out Chronicle.  Especially if you are a fan of comic books and characters with superpowers.  The movie also has many similarities to the Japanese anime movie Akira.  If you were granted extraordinary powers, how would you use them?  Could you handle the responsibility?  Chronicle makes you think about these things.

If you have any thoughts on Chronicle, make sure to leave us comments below.  We’d love to hear from you.  And thanks for reading.

  • You skipped seeing Cloverfield? Boooooooooo!!! Chronicle actually sounds like a good flick. I like the dynamic of three friends gaining powers together– it’s a lot different than one person going through it alone. Thanks for keeping this review spoiler-free, btw.

    • You just reminded me that I need to reblog this on the Cold Slither page.  About to do that now
