Marvel Plans to Release Facebook Game “Avengers Alliance”

Apparently Marvel is not satisfied with providing their games on your nearest console.  They want to take up real estate on your favorite social networking site, Facebook.  USA Today announced that Marvel plans on releasing it’s first ever Facebook game, Avengers Alliance, in the next three months.

In the free-to-play strategy game, you’re a trainee in world-police organization S.H.I.E.L.D., charged with assembling a team to face a cataclysmic event .

S.H.I.E.L.D. and leader Nick Fury realize they “need to call in The Avengers. The Avengers arrive and take one look at the situation and realize they need to call in everyone,” says TQ Jefferson, vice president of games production for Marvel Entertainment. “You’ll see not just the core Avengers, but characters like Wolverine, Spider-Man and characters from the Fantastic Four. When the Avengers call, everyone comes.”

Is it a coincidence that the game will be released prior to the big screen debut of The Avengers movie?  I think not.  This is perfect marketing strategy by Marvel to take advantage of the hype leading up to The Avengers.  Plus the game will be free, which never hurts.  Avengers Alliance will join other popular Facebook games like Farmville and Mafia Wars.

Like other social-network games, users are rewarded for playing with friends and can pay a few dollars to progress more quickly. “If you want to accelerate recruiting of heroes, you could buy gold to get more command points,” Lee says, or train your heroes faster.

I have yet to participate in any Facebook games.  Usually you have to allow the game access to a lot of your Facebook information, and I’ve never felt 100% comfortable doing that.  I may have to bend on that rule once Avengers Alliance comes out.  Being able to fight alongside heroes like Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man, along with my friends, will be a real treat.
