Marvel Announces New 12-Part Avengers vs X-Men Event for 2012

Marvel comics announced months ago that there would be a crossover event called Avengers: X-Sanction.  The event would involve two of Marvel’s biggest team franchises, The Avengers and X-Men.  Marvel also has been teasing a big event for 2012 with the phrase, “It’s Coming.” and subsequent image below.

Familiar image isn't it?

Well the wait for “It’s Coming.” is over.  What’s coming is Avengers vs X-Men, a 12-part bi-weekly miniseries starting in April 2012.  The 12-part series will be have some of Marvel’s “heavy hitters” onboard to write:  Jason Aaron, Brian Michael Bendis, Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction and Jonathan Hickman.

The conflict that brings these two teams at odds with one another involves the returning Phoenix Force and Hope Summers.  The speculation has always been that Hope Summers was either Jean Grey reincarnated or somehow tied to the Phoenix Force.  It looks like the returning Phoenix Force wants to bond with Hope Summers.  The Avengers see this powerful force as a threat to mankind, while the X-Men want to protect and shield Hope Summers from those who fear her and the Phoenix powers.

My only question is if 12 parts are necessary to tell this story.  It seems Marvel wants to draw this event out, even with it being a bi-weekly series.  Also, as cool as it is to see two fan favorite teams duke it out, who really thinks that one will come out on top of the other?  The Avengers and X-Men have squared off in the past.  Marvel’s usually ploy of killing off characters in their crossover events more than likely will not be implemented, since that would imply a member of one team killing off a member of the opposing team.  Yep….I don’t see that happening people.

So what are your thoughts on Avengers vs X-Men?  Leave us your comments below and let your voice be heard.
