KLIQNation Spotlight: FVSU and FAMU Marching Bands

On Saturday evening, September 3rd 2011 the Fort Valley State University Wildcats (my alma mater) ventured to Tallahassee, FL to face the Florida A&M University Rattlers.  It was an exciting game all the way to the end, full of highs and lows for both teams.  After FVSU took the lead with under two minutes to go, FAMU miraculously secured a tipped ball to a receiver and ran it in for a touchdown, giving them the 28-22 victory.

Honestly all I care about is the win/loss.  My team lost and that is all I am concerned with.  However, even though they lost they went down fighting and didn’t roll over for the “supposedly” better team.  I can take that loss over getting beat 52-14 or something similar.

For casual black college football fans, their attention is turned to the halftime shows to see the bands perform.  If you’re not familiar, halftime of a black college football game is a mini-event all to itself.  The movie Drumline does a fine job capturing the essence of the black marching band.

Near the end of the FVSU Blue Machine Marching Band performance I decided to start taping the show with my cellphone.

Right at the tail end you can hear the FAMU PA announcer start to get riled up to introduce the Rattlers’ marching band. Below is their performance, split into three videos:

The only thing I’ll say is after hearing all this hype about FAMU’s marching band, I was left not really impressed.  Sure they have a large number of band members, but you’d think that would help their sound quality.  Last year FVSU played Southern University for their Homecoming and their band sounded a lot better than FAMU’s.

Anyone else agree or disagree with my views on FAMU’s band?  If so, feel free to share in the Comments section below.
