30 Minutes Or Less Movie Review

After seeing so many action/adventure movies this summer, it was time to switch things up by adding a comedy to the mix. And in my opinion a movie prominently featuring Aziz Ansari (Tom Haverford from Parks and Recreation) and Danny McBride (Tropic Thunder, Eastbound & Down) fits the comedy description perfectly.

30 Minutes or Less stars Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) as Nick, a pizza delivery guy who ends up getting tangled up in Dwayne (McBride) and Travis (Nick Swardson)’s evil get-rich-quick-scheme.  Dwayne is the son of a former Marine (Fred Ward) who won $10 million in the lottery years ago.  Dwayne’s scared that with his father’s splurging there will be no money left for his inheritance.  The dastardly duo need $100,000 so they can hire a hitman to kill Dwayne’s father, so they decide to strap a bomb to Nick and force him to round up the money for them.  This leads Nick and Chet (Ansari) on a mission to retrieve $100,000 without blowing themselves up in the process.

I’m a fan of Ansari from Parks and Recreation, so seeing him as one of the leads of a comedy is a welcomed sight.  It was also a surprise to see the Eisenberg and Ansari pairing give the McBride and Swardson pairing a run for their money.  For example, the bank robbery had more laughs than I anticipated.  All these Frat Pack movies are pretty much the same – two bro-buddies get involved in some wild adventure, insert lots of ad-libbing and playing off one another, rinse and repeat.  Not that this creates bad movies because I enjoy the majority of them.  I also appreciate all these comedic actors and actresses joining together and appearing in movies together.  Another thing I appreciate is how the Frat Pack always introduces new members to the club.  Michael Cera would be the most recent graduate, and now they are ushering in Eisenburg and Ansari. I’d bet money on Ansari starring in three or more movies within the next two years.

In closing, 30 Minutes or Less gets my KLIQNation approval.  You’ll get plenty of laughs, and not feel like you wasted your time and money.  However it’s not The Hangover-level funny where you have to see it or else feel like you’re missing a historic event.  Waiting for 30 Minutes or Less to make it to Netflix is satisfactory.
