Green Lantern (2011) Film Review

By:  Adam Black

I must admit I was very apprehensive about the release of the Green Lantern movie, mainly because I am a diehard comic book fan as well of the GL comics and mythos. I was mainly disappointed in what I saw in the trailers leading up to the movie with none really impressing me. As a result, I had very low expectations for this movie. Then I read of the bad reviews online and I cringed even more.

After watching the movie I thought the film was not awful but was not as good in comparison to other comic book movies this summer in Thor and X-Men First Class.

What I didn’t like…

The story moved along at a snail’s pace mainly because it is an origin story so we need to establish the story of Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern Corps, Parallax, and Hector Hammond. This made the story really slow.

Hector Hammond is a villain from the comic that I never liked and thought that he was just not an interesting character in this movie. I felt Sinestro would have been good enough for a villain in this case but maybe later…

What I liked…

I found Sinestro’s character to be very interesting. You find while watching the movie what drives his character to do the things he does. He was also charismatic and could have movie watchers ready to fight with him.

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively did excellent job acting and had excellent chemistry together.

My Rating…

I give Green Lantern a rating of three out of five stars. I did not feel the movie deserved the incredibly bad reviews that it got but the movie was not excellent either. The movie is a definitely worth a watch. I feel that if a sequel is greenlit that the viewer will not have to sit through so much exposition.
